The Arboretum was extended in 1879 by the acquisition of half an acre of land next to Loudon Street.  This extension was known as "The Shady Nook" (bringing the area to 17.5 acres of public open space) and was later used as the Frame Yard, see map (Left).

The 1987 Gazebo and a small area of grass and trees now occupy this area.

A wildlife Garden for the education of the children is now located here.
