the following people without who's help this web-site would not have
been possible:
The Staff of Derby Local Studies Library, Locating books and documents relating to the Arboretum. Paul Hudson of the Local Studies Library - for the photo information and use of old maps. Stephanie Hitchcock for contacting me with valuable information regarding Joseph Strutt (including a correction regarding his portrait and birth & death details). Derby City Council Mayor's Office - Joseph Strutt Portrait. Dawn Dagley, Derby Parks Dept. for her continuing support and help with locating old photos and research material. Tony Griffin, Derby Parks Dept. for allowing me to search through his archives of press cuttings, documents and photographs relating to the Arboretum. Also for his continuing help with ongoing research. The most interesting photo was the 1899 photo of the Victorian Bandstand, this was found in the archives and is the only copy in existence, and at that a photo copy which may not have seen the light of day for twenty years!. I had to spend several hours restoring the image to what you see on this website. The photo of the headless Boar, originally taken by the parks Dept. in 1941, has only been used once since - this website has the only original of this photo. The Boy on a cannon was taken by the Derby Evening Telegraph, unfortunately they no longer have a copy, so the Parks Dept. copy is the only remaining copy. My Father for his childhood memories, in particular the bombing of Reginald Street School, also his recollections of rebuilding 13 Madeley Street as an apprentice joiner during 1944 (age 16). Richard Felix (Derby Heritage Centre, St. Peter's Churchyard, Derby) for information regarding Charles Fox and the Crystal Palace. The Late Mr. C. Bradley (Brad), my friend and neighbour, for his recollection of the bombing of the bandstand and destruction of the Florentine Boar. Gemma Evans at the Derby Evening Telegraph for locating the photographs of the aviary (1940s photo), bombed bandstand and air raid shelters. Ron McKeown, Local Historian for the Derby Trader, for additional information concerning the Crystal Palace and locating details of Gallows Balk/Baulk. Derby Evening Telegraph Photographic Department (Bygones) Derek Palmer: for the use of some of his photos and his help with putting together a slide show for my public presentations. |
